August 21, 2019When laser is performed close to the eyes, additional precautions may be necessary to protect your vision. While protective eyewear is used during laser treatments, certain areas around the eyes may require specialised protection known as ocular shields.
Understanding what these shields are and how they’re used can help you feel more comfortable and informed about your treatment.
What Are Ocular Shields?
Ocular shields are small, medical-grade protective devices positioned over the eye, underneath the eyelids. They create a protective barrier between the eye and laser energy during procedures performed very close to the eye.
Unlike standard laser safety glasses or goggles, appropriately selected ocular shields provide protection when treating areas where external eyewear may not offer sufficient coverage, such as certain eyeliner or eyelid tattoos.
Why Are Ocular Shields Important?
The eyes are particularly sensitive to laser energy, and accidental exposure can cause serious injury.
Ocular shields provide an additional layer of protection during treatments close to the eyes. They must be compatible with the laser being used and appropriately fitted, as different laser wavelengths require specific protective measures.
What Happens When Ocular Shields Are Required?
If ocular shields are necessary for your treatment, your practitioner will explain the process beforehand.
The shields are carefully positioned over the eyes before treatment begins. You may notice some pressure or awareness of the shields, but they should not cause significant pain.
If you experience discomfort or irritation during treatment, let your practitioner know immediately.
What Should You Look Out For?
Ocular shields must be medical-grade, suitable for the laser procedure and appropriately cleaned and inspected before use. Damaged shields or unsuitable alternatives, such as contact lenses or ordinary glasses, must never be used as substitutes.
If you experience persistent eye pain, significant redness, sensitivity to light or changes to your vision following treatment, seek prompt medical attention.
